Brief about Nirmal Bahuddeshiya Sanstha

NIRMAL is a non-political, non-religious and development oriented grass root level and not for profit organization. Emphasis of the organization had been to address the problem through dissemination of scientific production procedures and management and identified the key economic activities prevalent in operated areas to make them more income generating for professional entrepreneurship. Keeping in view to success the same the organization formed to be as facilitator in the year 2007, by a group of seven enthusiastic persons from different part of the state of Maharashtra, with different developmental background.

Nirmal was started in Bhandara district of Maharashtra, India and was formally registered under Societies Registration act of 1860 in the year 2010. Over the two years, Nirmal’s focus has been on the development of poor. Its activities have diversified in the multiple developmental fields. The NGO is working in rural as well as urban and semi urban areas in collaboration with district administration, other government departments and developmental organizations. It aims to provide people from backward areas over the opportunity to work in evaluated and credible NGOs in Maharashtra. Programs are selected that best match the skills, area of interest, expertise, and time availability of the individual, with a view to strengthen and add value to the ongoing work of NGOs in India’s social development sector. With a brief Nirmal’s vision is to influence positive social change. The mission of Nirmal is aiming to bridge the distance between people by providing opportunities to individuals to influence positive social change through an exchange of ideas, knowledge, skills and learning by facilitating volunteering in India‘s social development sector. The establishment of Nirmal in 2010 became a fact after a group of people felt that there was a requirement for more volunteering initiative in India’s development sector. Volunteering was already happening, but, more could be done to benefit both the volunteer as well as the NGO by providing them the right match to utilize their skills in the best possible manner to the beneficiary’s advantage.

Nirmal believes that integration is one of the key words of development approach; the experience and knowledge of the past years have convinced the organization about the importance of interdependence and integration. To better understand the rationale and the importance of this close “integration” in the process of community development, it is important to keep in mind Nirmal’s rules of development, as these rules are the outcome of an in-depth reflection on our work. “Action – Reflection – Action” well explains our concept of “integration”. A drinking water well, watershed management, Farmers groups, Women groups, various development committees, the mobilization of the youth as agents of change in their communities, collectively trigger and provide a fertile ground for a new mindset that will nourish the villagers’ motivation for a development that is rooted within the community itself. We are convinced that sustainable community development is only possible if and when all elements such as economic, social, political, environmental and cultural are brought together and systematically “integrated”. Community development is feasible only if all segments of the society are mobilized: weaker women, widows who are not treated equally, marginal farmers, jobless youth, poor children who do not receive any education. The outcome of Nirmal’s community development, implementing the principle of integration, has not been achieved in isolation. It has been developed through the support and contribution of many people of the society: those who were part of Nirmal in the past and those on the present, in this quest for human solidarity and sharing: members of the committee, donors, volunteers, workers and well wishers.

So far, Nirmal’s work at the grassroots level on a variety of social issues like mainly focusing on rural health & Natural Resource Management (NRM) / agriculture / environment / water, but simultaneously it giving priority on education, equal rights, social interaction and rural development etc. and have already positively impacted the lives of thousands of people living in socially deprived circumstances, many women have been helped by programs defending equal rights, many children of all ages have had chances to develop through literacy programs and other educational activities, many lives have been improved by well-developed health and awareness programs, our ongoing investment in our volunteering program will enable us to effectively and positively keep on impacting the lives of many of India’s most disadvantaged people.

Nirmal has been operating on this cusp and has played a confident role in helping the voluntary sector understand. Even though this often resembles walking a tight rope, this balancing act is crucial to building effective partnerships. In doing so, Nirmal has also raised expectation for itself from both sides. The initiatives that Nirmal has taken on have been mostly in line with meeting these expectations and playing the support role for partnerships. In playing the support role one crucial aspect is building the capacity of voluntary agencies as its core functions. It has been entered in third years since started working on this issue and despite some interesting initiatives and programs over the past two years; we are still some time away from the dream of a significant number of effective voluntary agencies collaborating with the government on important issues of human development. Both in terms of numbers of organizations with competence and the environment for collaboration, which are the two issues on which Nirmal has planned its interventions, the task is still immense.

We are however conscious of it and are on that point of the learning curve where with little effort we shall be able to scale up initiatives to levels where we can begin to gain results fairly soon. The first two years of Nirmal have thus been extremely useful in experimenting in the field of development support in the rural context. The vision statement of Nirmal still holds, and continues to guide our involvement and programming. In line with the vision statement is the Mission Statement which we have modified a little to make it more inclusive to partnerships between different partners and thereby going beyond just a focus as has been the case so far.

The issue of partnerships in development is an evolution of the thinking that Nirmal was formed with. In the changed economic environment where the private sector is playing a more significant role their involvement in the development process is natural especially in the areas of livelihoods development. Nirmal has thus expanded the scope of its work to also play roles with private sector initiatives. The shape that these interventions will take will still take some time to evolve. An important change in the year under review has been on the governance side. The changes have provided Nirmal with a greater level of professionalism and also an opportunity to bring into experiences.
